The most was 19 fatal events in 1997, and the previous low was eight fatal events in 2003, 2006, and 2007.

Plane Madness

Plane Madness

This is a very good podcast and blog by Capt'n Chris, a FAR certified Part 121 Airline Transport rated Airline Captain.  With a slightly twisted slant he brings you interesting news, things going-on in aviation, thought-provoking editorials, and a worthy rant here and there:  "In a nutshell I'm just a flyer trying to make a living while still trying to enjoy what I do!  So by coming here you get my rant and raves and all things aviation related (and some not) and everything else in between."  Airline enthusiasts will find a lot of good content here, and Plane Madness just might float to the top of your aviation podcast list!

Good Restaurants for One

A humorous look back at 2008 and a wary eye on 2009

12/19/2008 11:15 AM
itunes pic
These days are dismal and miserable when they should be a lot more pleasant, given the time of year. In an effort to provide our listeners with some giggles (gallows humor?) we assembled a team of industry experts, who, it will quickly be apparent, know their stuff. This group pokes fun at the industry and its brands and players. This podcast is pure tongue in cheek and should be taken as such.

Aircraft Electrical Power Systems ? Charged with Opportunities

Balaji Srimoolanathan, Program Manager for Aerospace and Defence, Frost & Sullivan in India has produced a fascinating report on the "more electric airplane". You can see a summary at http://www.iag-inc.com/articles/aeps.pdf. As this chart shows, aircraft are increasingly becoming "electric". Balaji's research suggests that this is the future of aviation. His mention of fuel cells to be used by aircraft is fascinating - think of where this could go.

The New Food Tourist

In September I went to Egypt and in November I traveled to Ecuador!  I have literally been a traveling fool!

This episode is about pilots, flight attendants and tourists being foolish!

A guide from the Galapagos talks about the silly questions tourists ask him, and at the end of the episode there is a great story about a foolish passenger that involves a rope, an indian and a blanket!

Student Pilot Journal Podcast #23

Instrument Flying Lesson 1

I took my first instrument flying lesson. Not much video to look at, but at least it is documented. As you can imagine there is not much of a visual when doing instrument training. It also did not help that I forgot my camera mount so my apologies for the less than average quality and the audio has some noise issues. I edited the audio the best that I could to cut out the scratchiness that you may hear from time to time. Suggestions for future instrument podcasts are always welcome. Just like the private training...it is always an experiment to capture the training effectively.

Lunch in New Smyrna

10/16/2008 06:51 PM
Hello everyone. The weather finally improved this week enough to get some flying in. I have not been able to fly as much as i have wanted to lately. Work has been hectic among other things. Today I took off early and picked my sister up and we flew for a late lunch to New Smyrna (EVB). Sorry David....I left work early so I knew you could not go...and that 152 is tiny... :-) I promise we will go soon.....anyway...There is a great little restaurant off of the airport called Stellas Skyline Cafe. I have been there a couple of times before and the trip is fairly uneventful so it was a good choice. The weather was great with a few bumps. Clouds stayed scattered at 3500 and apparently everyone had the same idea as me for flying 2500. I contacted Orlando Approach for flight following and they were constantly updating all of us at the same altitude. I tried to get the club 172 or the Archer but they were both reserved so I opted for the 152. What a long trip...weighing in at an hour to get there. I followed the interstate and I swore cars were passing me.

In the next week or so I will be filming a new podcast. This one will be a little different. Often I am asked how I record video and audio so I figured it would be a good opportunity to answer that in a podcast. I will also be showing off some iPhone apps as well. I have been using foreflight mobile and I recently purchased "Checklist" from the same vendor. I need to get the iPhone suction mount first. The company is on back order for the cradle that the phone sits in. Anyway, be on the lookup for that in a couple of weeks when I can coordinate an flight to show it all off.

Podcasting Regularity

12/18/2008 09:05 AM

I was having a quick chat with David Allen, co-host of the Pilot’s Flight Pod Log, about podcasting, and the difficulty of getting them out on a regular basis.  I said something to the effect of, “I need some podcast fiber to stay regular.”  We laughed, and then it was downhill from there, with David rattling off a few funny quips, which spurred an idea.  The result is a new product (that exists only in my mind).  Introducing Podamucil, daily therapy for staying regular with podcasts.  The secret formula used by Jack and the gang at UCAP is now available for everyone!  I’ll start a daily regimen right away.

SPC #021-Good Freakin' Flight

12/14/2008 01:07 AM

I'm back SPC listeners!  I've had no time to produce new episodes for a while, but I forced myself tonight...and put off some other stuff.  So what we have is another training episode, Episode 21, "Good Freakin' Flight".  This is a solo flight that I took after returning from my Dive trip, and this was the next flight in my training after the night flight that was covered in episodes 19 and 20.

I hope you enjoy this episode, and I'll try to be more consistant with the releases going forward.  Please give me feedback as always.  Also, I'm working on a couple of videos, including the video from the flight covered in this episode as well as a tutorial on how to record in cockpit audio, as this is my most frequently asked question from listeners.  This is in addition to a start that I've got on the next audio episode as well.

As usual, for up to date information on flights, feel free to follow me on twitter.  Thanks again, everyone.  Get out there and fly!

SPC #020-Tour de Phoenix-Part 2

10/04/2008 03:50 PM

I’m back, after an exclusive one month tour of Europe, Scandinavia, and…no, that’s not true.  In fact, I’ve just been really busy, and haven’t had a chance to finish this episode up and send it out on the feed.  Bad me, I know.  So, we skipped September in the podcast…I’ll try to make it up to you all.

Here is episode 20, the second and final part of my first night flight around the Phoenix area.  As I said in the audio, I really enjoyed this flight a lot.  Now that I have my license, I need to do some more night flying.

Enjoy the episode, and by all means, let me know what you think of the podcast.

What's a Podcast?

From Wikipedia:

"Podcasting" is a web-based broadcast medium. Audio files (most commonly in MP3 format) are made available online in a way that allows software to automatically detect the availability of new files (generally via RSS), and download the files for listening at the user's convenience.

The word "podcasting" is a portmanteau of the words iPod and broadcasting. A podcast is like an audio magazine subscription: a subscriber receives regular audio programs delivered via the internet, and can listen to them at their leisure.

Podcasts differ from traditional internet audio in two important ways. In the past, listeners have had to either tune in to web radio on a schedule, or they have had to search for and download individual files from webpages. Podcasts are much easier to get. They can be listened to at any time because a copy is on the listener's computer or portable music player (hence the "pod" in "podcasting"), and they are automatically delivered to subscribers, so no active downloading is required.

Podcasting is functionally similar to the use of timeshift-capable digital video recorders (DVRs), such as TiVo, which let users record and store television programs for later viewing.
