Creating & Using Your Member Web Space

Why do I get a login error when I access my FTP directory?
This can be caused by a few things. First, make sure you are inputting the username and password exactly as they appear within your confirming setup email. This includes using upper and lowercase characters when necessary, since the web servers are case sensitive. In the event that username for your website is different from the username that you use for news service access, be sure that you are not getting these two IDs confused. Finally, verify that the server address in your FTP client is set to web.newsguy.com. If you continue to run into a login problem, please email our tech support staff with your UserID information, and the specific error message you are receiving.

How do I add multiple counters to my website?
When your website directory is initially setup, you'll be supplied with a basic counter for your home page. This is located within your directory as a ".dat" file along with your public_html subdirectory. In order to set additional counters within your other pages, we would need to allocate extra ".dat" files for each new counter you wanted to add. To do this, send us an email indicating the number of counters you would like to setup, as well as the username and address for your website. Once we setup the additional ".dat" files, you'll be able to link those counters to specific web pages at your site.

How can I set my counter to start from a number other than 0?
When our tech group creates your website directory, a basic counter file is automatically setup ("yourpagename".dat) within your home directory and should seeing this file when you first connect through FTP. This counter is defaulted to 0, but you can change this value by editing the ".dat" file. In order to do this, transfer the current ".dat file" from your website directory to a local directory on your computer via FTP. When transferring this file make sure your FTP client is set to ASCII transfer rather than Binary. Once you've moved the ".dat" file to a directory on your computer, open the file in Notepad and locate the section that includes the number setting for the counter. When you find this item, you can change the setting to whatever value you like, and save the ".dat" file at that point. After you've saved the file, upload it to the same location website directory where your original counter/".dat" file exists, so that the original file is overwritten by the file that you modified.
